My ART | Gallerists: Ben Bergman and Benny Chan

Why Collect?

Benny – I collect the work I love. I especially love being able to wake up each morning to see beautiful work hanging in my room. In my room, I have a new blue painting with gold leaf by Luise Fong, a few big works by Et.Al, a small work by Reuben Paterson, two sculptures by Billy Apple, and a Dane Mitchell sculpture that he gave me after working in the New Zealand Pavilion in Venice. I feel that if you love the artists, you’ll love their works even more.

What was the last work of art you bought?

Benny – A bold black painting by Luise Fong called Small Nexus II from the exhibition Belonging: Stories of the Contemporary New Zealand Asian Artists. It references her early practise of drilling holes into her paintings back in the 1990s, as seen in her Visa Gold Art Awards winning work Minor.

If you could own any work of art, what would it be?

Benny – A Fatu Feu’u painting. He is such an inspiration and a wonderful person, paving the way for so many Pacific artists in New Zealand.

What should stay the same?

Benny – Going into a dealer to see artwork in the flesh. I know that people enjoy buying online, but sometimes artwork can look different in a photograph. I take pleasure in being able to go into a gallery, to experience artworks – to say “Yes, I love this, I want this in my house/office”.

Why choose My ART?

Benny – My ART helps me buy works easily, letting me pay them off on a monthly basis.

Art Dealer or Gallerist?

Ben – At heart, a gallerist. Working with artists and creating exhibitions never gets old. However, working with clients to place artworks within their collection is a rewarding experience, especially when you get to see it in their homes. So, a bit of both, I guess!

Why did you open your own gallery?

Ben – It was instinctual; I was drawn to it. Art speaks to you on many levels, some less defined than others. My first exhibition was in 2001 and since then it hasn’t really stopped!

What is art for?

Ben – As a collector – well being. I look at my art every day, and it makes me smile. Well-placed art within your home should always be an emotionally captivating experience.

What are you reading/watching/listening to?

Ben – Rewatching The West Wing. Perfectly cast and written, a compelling contemporary world narrative. Listening to: Billie Holiday.
